Mildred is a fucking great name. Airyn is a bit rougher, but in general I feel that us trans femmes have absolutely nothing on trans mascs who really do go wild with their names or end up as one of the 75% of trans guys called Ryland, or a variation thereof.

I took that as tongue and cheek supportive. As in, the friend is totally cool with their friend coming out as trans, but cants get over the choice of name.

Is there a name for that type of swap humour? Where you set up a joke and the punchline plays off the less obvious point in the lead up?

The actual type of play on words is called paraprosdokian. Where the in this case punchline is surprising in a way that makes you reinterpret the setup.

In this case “I wanna be supportive but,” is kind of priming the reader to expect they’re gonna say some transphobic shit then you read “fucking Mildred?” and those expectations are subverted by the actual point being essentially “Why you taking names from 2000’s obituaries?”

To my knowledge there’s not like a widespread name for this as like a comedic genre because it’s just one of the basic ways you can structure a joke. I’ve seen some comics call it a swerve or an anti-climax but nothing widespread.

Thank you. That is so much more accurate than “bait and switch”, which another user helpfully provided, but they didn’t realize how unsatisfying that would be for me.

I use this form of humour alot so now I have words for it!

it’s a bit of a meme that trans people pick weird ass names. this one falls on the better side imo; usually it’s a name you’d only hear in a bingo game

I think it’s cute. I’m cishet so don’t have authority here but I do think the joking about it is fine because this particular joke usually comes from a place of understanding, as opposed to the attack helicopter joke that’s clearly made from a place of ignorance and othering.

It’s like Jewish comedians making fun of themselves vs what nazis think a “joke” about Jewish people is.

LMAO I’m sending that to my fellow trans friends

Atleast when you let people pick their own names it’s actually interesting and isn’t just “Jeff” or something (no hate to Jeff tho <3)

My respect for the guy took a huge bump in 2016, when he vocaly stated that trump was racist bully and a huge piece of shit. Great guy.

Many of us are, but we don’t make the news because it’s just ordinary parental love. It’s good to have high-profile examples for the media to report on, or people may only hear about the bigotry of terrible parents like Elon Musk.
