  • The funniest part is that tesla self driving is objectively unsafe. There’s a reason other auto manufacturers artificially limit their systems, which aren’t far behind and in some cases are on par or arguably ahead of teslas self driving. This is also part of the reason musk is getting involved in politics, to censure the nhtsa from reporting on accidents and deaths due to his systems and remove regulations slowing him from deploying his unsafe garbage

Like you can buy a Mercedes with drive pilot, which is a much more measured approach to self driving and fully hands off in tested and approved markets. You can buy a Cadillac with super cruise which does something similar, ford blue cruise, bmw driving assistant, etc

Notice the difference? Unlike teslas “beta” full self driving these work in managed conditions, either limited to geographic areas, road conditions, etc. they’re still bougie as fuck, dumb as shit relative to public transit, and ridiculously expensive, but if you’re going to trust your actual ass life to some robot shit maybe go with one of the ones that’s terrified of the liability involved and not the one run by a baby that will sweep your death under the rug.

But man a public transit system would just be the absolute worst right? Better keep dumping our money into making tons of shitty cars that can barely drive themselves. I get to spend 1/4 of a mortgage on a goofy looking piece of shit that breaks if you tow something with it, or if a scooter hits it, or if someone puts a magnet on it but at least I don’t have to sit near any poor people on my way to work

  • Oh I didn’t mean larger like that, I meant width wise. Standard rack width is 19 inches so if it’s one of those specialty racks that’s narrower that thing I said about repurposing an old 1u/2u is pointless because it won’t fit. Doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t use this rack, just that that idea is no good.

4u is fine unless you want to expand down the line. Networking gear and stuff. However if it’s a narrow rack I don’t think there will be much to put in it for those purposes? Depends on your goals. I have a larger rack but I also have my whole networking stack in it, switch, poe switch, ups, router, nas, etc.

I would consider posting on the unraid forums. There may be someone who has used similar hardware and can give guidance on how they approached the setup. The benefit of unraid is ultimately that the support community is very solid

  • How do you connect the drives? Looking at specs there’s only one sata port (which I don’t actually see anywhere, but it says it is there, although using it slows the second nvme lane)

USB connected drives in a raid array are not ideal. USB connectivity is not as solid as a direct sata connection and a drive suddenly disappearing from your area, especially parity, is quite a headache

No pci slot so you can’t add an hba for more sata lanes either. You could do one of those nvme to sata things but I’ve heard bad things about the reliability of those.

If it’s free though I def think it’s worth finding a way to make it work. The specs are more than enough for unraid and usually those tiny pcs are pretty power efficient, which is nice. But that’s the issue to work around, connecting the hard drives reliably.

WRT what to put them in it could be anything really. You could get a cheap broken 1 or 2u server case where someone’s pulled the motherboard and powersupply, rig something in there to hold them all. Should be more than enough space for 5 drives and will probably have cages for at least 2-3, maybe all 5 if you get lucky. Might even have hot swap ones. Dunno if this would fit though, that rack looks small and I couldn’t get the specs to load, is it full sized or a tiny one?

Could also see if there’s some kind of 3d print thing. There’s probably a 3d print thing to rack mount that mini pc.

  • On device isn’t always ideal. I don’t use immich because i don’t have a large photo library. But I do use komga. Nextcloud can sort and manage epub/pdf like komga but as poVoq said, the specialized solution is superior

This point is where on device app is not the ideal situation, for me at least. These apps exist. Tachiyomi and the resultant forks can import a local library. And frankly even a somewhat massive local library can fit on a cheap SD card

The point of the server is portability. With this I have portability across my devices. My library, reading status, metadata, etc is available on all devices. I can read a book on my ereader, close it, the status is synced. I can pick up from my laptop and the same thing occurs. I can pick up from my phone, download the book to my device, and keep reading while I’m away from home. If I wanted to I could open remote access to my server and avoid the need for downloading the books but that’s a whole thing

I don’t think it would make sense to run a server solely for this but it’s a service that doesn’t take much in terms of resources and I read a lot.

  • Yeah there are plenty of apps that can rip from tidal, apple music, etc. noteburner, deemix, deezloader, musify, notecable, and noteburner are all ones that I tried where they successfully ripped audio from streams to flac but spectrals showed the flac was transcoded from lossy source.

Granted this is basically inaudible and super nitpicky, like honestly show me the person who can truly hear the difference between a modern 320 mp3 and a 16bit flac in a double blind situation. But if you’re using these rippers to upload to a private tracker, especially a popular release, guarantee someone will check

That said streamrip can get deezer 16 bit, 24bit tidal mqa (which isn’t actually lossless), and 24/192 qobuz but you need a premium account and things break from time to time

    https://github.com/nathom/streamrip

Apple music remains a very closely guarded secret although I recently saw this: https://github.com/zhaarey/apple-music-downloader . I have to create a burner and vm to play with this though bc it’s pretty sketch

  • Most of the publicly available ones that rip streaming services to lossless fail spectral checks. They can rip high quality MP3s which they then transcode to flac but if you were to upload this somewhere like RED you’d get shit for it. Literally every one I’ve found has failed the spectral check thread on RED

This MAY not apply for Spotify as they don’t stream lossless to begin with

The people that can actually rip fully lossless files from deezer, apple music, qobuz, tidal, etc guard that info like crazy. The second the method gets public you better believe all those companies are patching it out. Plus it probably doesn’t hurt that being the one with the keys to the method gets you like infinite ratio

  • A clone of 12ft.io but the old version before they got into beef with the New York Times and kneecapped it. It doesn’t work on every single article with a paywall but it works on the overwhelming majority (including New York Times articles)

And it doesn’t really count because I knew I’d use it but komga+komf+fmd2. I list it though because I didn’t realize I’d use this stack so much. I can now read with my phone, my laptop, my ereader, etc. tachiyomi/mihon works, reading progress is synced, and I never have to visit one of those garbage manga aggregation sites ever again

  • My father in law, who is otherwise a very nice person, overuses ellipses in his informal written communication and it bothers the hell out of me

The crazy thing is he is extremely well educated. He was a professor at a super classy university, had a very distinguished career, etc. dude can write. But hand him an iphone and all of a sudden he can’t end a sentence definitively…

  • Yes birth certificates are a state thing

Do it asap imo if it’s important to you. Social security cards and passports are likely suspended for the next four years at least, unfortunately. While I hope most states will resist this bullshit, who knows what the fuck will happen, thus asap

Minnesota is one of the pain in the ass states. You need either a physicians letter saying you’ve received appropriate clinical treatment or a court order to get a marker change

OutFront Minnesota can give you assistance or at least more info

  • We had to wear goggles that simulated being drunk like that one episode of the Simpsons and then try to do basic tasks like walk from one point to another or whatever so they could show how it impaired your motor skills. But it backfired because they just really exaggerate the visual impairment you get from drinking, they’re basically putting on a really too strong pair of glasses. But we did several rounds and eventually got somewhat used to it, it was a big game of who could seem the least impaired, the message was completely lost on us, etc

I mean they’re obviously arguing chromosomal sex is the end all be all

while it is true the gonads and external genitalia of embryos appear the same regardless of chromosomal sex it is also true that generally that embryo will develop sex characteristics in weeks 7-12 based on chromosomal assignments that occurred at conception.

The xy embryos have the presence of the sry gene on the Y chromosome which triggers development of gonads into testes, testosterone, and amh. Wolffian ducts become early stages of a penis, amh causes Müllerian ducts to regress

Xx embryos lack sry gene obviously, which allow the gonads to become ovaries. The wolffian ducts regress without amh and the Müllerian ducts become early stages of a vagina

Then week 12+ is when uterus/prostate start

That said biological sex is obviously much more complex than this. Intersex people exist. And there’s a great deal of variation in that.

Gonadal dysgenesis can occur when the gonads do not fully develop into testes or ovaries, incomplete or ambiguous genitalia.

True hermaphroditism can occur where both ovary and testicular tissue is present, again usually leading to ambiguous genitalia (no futas)

Androgen insensitivity can lead to ambiguous genitalia or in some cases an xy person with female external genitalia

Alternatively excess androgen can cause masculinized genitalia in xx people

Kleinfelters (xxy) can give underdeveloped testes, infertility, and low testosterone

    Turners (x) underdeveloped ovaries, infertility

And this just kind of hand waves all those people away. Do you feel like your identity is linked to the fact that you’re in this minority and maybe doesn’t match what people perceive you to be? Are you an xy person with female genitalia because of androgen insensitivity who feels that your genitalia don’t match who you are. Well technically you’re a guy now I guess by these rules although we all know they mean “if you look like a chick you’re a chick”

And this all is besides the scientific evidence on transgender neurology, which is large and growing.

The bed nucleus of stria terminals is associated with gender identity and is typically smaller in cis women and larger in cis men. In amab trans women it tends to be similar to that of cis women

Cortical thickness of trans individuals tends to align more closely with their preferred gender

Trans people tend to show brain connectivity patterns in regions associated with self perception and body image aligned with their identity

Etc. this is already a novel. And this doesn’t even touch upon the *many many * more things at play here like genetics and epigenetics, prenatal neural developments and hormonal factors, social structures around gender (though tbf they did somewhat touch on this if only to outright deny its validity without offering any real rationale other than “we think it’s dumb”)

But these people obviously don’t give a shit about any of this. They’ll negate it, attack the source, outright deny the claims with no counter evidence, etc. or they’ll just do what they’re currently doing, remain completely ignorant on the topic and seize authority and power to implement their will regardless of the scientific consensus.

Dark times but fuck them. You don’t need the governments approval to express yourself. although I do recognize this will probably be an absolute nightmare for anyone who has not gotten a name change, modified birth certificate, drivers license, etc. if you haven’t done that maybe do it asap, especially for federal documents like passports (especially if you plan to bail on this shithole)
