My buddy is a little streamer (gets maybe a few dozen viewers) and he got early access to it as well. Although he doesn’t add any fake hype, he’s just a very good hype man.

Ubuntu Server supports Windows Active Directory. I haven’t used it for anything but authentication (and authentication works flawlessly) and some basic directory/share permissions but theoretically it should support group policy too.

It’d be cool if there was a mainstream FOSS alternative though (there might be, I’ve done literally 0 research), but this works okay-ish in the meantime.

But for management of the actual production servers at work I use a combination of ManageEngine (super great and reasonably priced) and Microsoft’s Entra (doesn’t work well, don’t do it)

Ubuntu Server baby. That shit is absolutely rock solid, I’ve literally never had an update break stuff in the decade+ I’ve been managing it.

I actually love the cross platform PowerShell stuff for two reasons. One it’s really nice to be able to have something that works on my windows environment and the Linux one, and 2 because PowerShell is enormously better than bash.

This! I work in IT, in fact, I’m the director of both the IT and software teams at my company and I am constantly teaching my new techs and reminding my existing techs that they need to remember just how little the “average” person knows about computers, and how much more that is than what they’d actually care to learn.

99% of people don’t care about computers, or how to make things “more efficient”, or anything else. They just care about the easiest way to do something. And like it or not, the easiest way for the vast majority of people is through a GUI.

For me (sysadmin actually) it’s because what I’m doing is either simple enough that I can use Nano (editing simple config files) or complicated enough that I’ll want a full fledged IDE. I use VSCode and it handles remote files really really well.

Although I have learned a little bit of Vi/Vim because sometimes thats all you have.

Plus if you’re doing major changes (like more than editing a line or two) you shouldn’t be doing that on a production server anyways. Like if I found out an engineer or dev was primarily working directly off of the server they would probably be on their way out the door. Uptime is worth way too much for that nonsense.

Tbf, the file explorer is actually one really good argument for GUIs over terminals. Same with editing text. Its either simple enough to use Nano or I need a proper text editor. I don’t mess around with vim or anything like that that.

Its all tools. Some things are easier in a file manager, some things are easier in a GUI.

Yes it’s definitely 100% a reasonable choice for people who don’t even technically live in cities. Absolutely

Yes and that’s it’s point. Its fun, it’s dumb, and it doesn’t really have any drama that you have to follow. Its not supposed to be a “solid or serious musical”.

I imagine you’re also the type of person who doesn’t like the first couple of fast and furious movies. And there’s nothing wrong with that, different stroke for different folks and all that.

Plus, Cats is so much fun to actually put on. I’m a tech guy, but Cats is one of my all time favorites to do because there’s a ton that happens, and it’s super flashy which is really fun to program and manage. But that doesn’t really matter for how good a musical actually is.

I disagree. I think disability access should be one of the most important things considered when designing public spaces.

Its something that I (an American) honestly took for granted until I spent some time in Europe. I’m fortunate to be completely physically and mentally (for this conversation lol) capable, but I have friends who are not. But going around Europe, especially outside of big cities, it was shocking to see how many buildings aren’t wheelchair accessible, how roads crossings aren’t designed for people with vision impairments, how little braille there was, bathrooms without mobility bars, and countless other little things.

And the argument I heard a lot was either “but they’re old buildings” or “it’ll cost too much money” and honestly those are some BS answers.

Idk the US does a lot wrong, but the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) really does seem to be the global standard. And it’s an incredibly good thing.

I’ve used pretty much all of the headsets on the market. I still haven’t tried a Big screen VR headset though :(

For popular headsets I’d rank them kinda like this

1. Valve Index - it’s just really old and really expensive now, don’t buy one unless you get a hell of a deal on it used
2. Quest 2 - Still very very good, screens are getting a little dated now
3. PSVR2 - its a little janky on PC but it works fine and the OLEDs are sublime
4. Pixmax Crystal - Money not a problem this is the best headset I’ve tried. The FOV is crazy, displays are beautiful, and tracking is damn near perfect. Its just like $2300 for the whole lot
5. Quest 3 - Overall the best headset on the market. Its $570 (just get the pro strap, trust me) and gets you so close to the big boys in screen quality, plus it’s wireless, plus it has crazy good passthrough (I use it a lot, most people don’t), and streams PC games perfectly.

PSVR2 has really really really good looking displays, but it has some other downsides which really bring it down in the rankings. I’d stay away from it unless you get a deal on a used one, then it would absolutely be worth it.

I’m not the person who originally replied but locomotion is significantly more comfortable than teleports. The teleporting makes me dizzy and messes with my sense of balance and orientation.

I also don’t get motion sick in any non-vr setting either.
