I agree honestly. I’ve gone through the exact process op has described several times now and flew even more before the process started.

I think the lines are worse than they used to be. I have not seen the scan improve anything. The only time I’ve seen things move slower for me is recently the agent hadn’t done an opt out in a while and had to remember how to do it. The TSA precheck line I was in did not have opt out signs posted. I just politely asked anyways (and they did comply).

I had a similar situation happen with customs where the guy was confused by my request and hadn’t done one it the old way in a while but honored it without argument.

ClamAV is mostly for filtering things on mail servers or uploads to a shared resource like a wiki.

You can also use it as a system virus scanner, but most viruses it detects are Windows viruses.

Yeah, he runs a Linux gaming website, yeah he talks about games that run on Linux which is cool, but … make no mistake he doesn’t have some deeper journalistic insight. If Microsoft does forbid kernel level anticheat, that will indeed be a game changer.

There are Ukrainian and Russian ties… AFAIK it’s used heavily on both sides of the conflict. The founder had some commentary as to why the stance they’ve taken is the stance they’ve taken.

The company Tailscale is a giant target and has a much higher risk in getting compromised than my VPN or even accessible services.

One must be careful about this mindset. A bunch of smart lightbulbs that are individually operated aren’t a particularly appealing target either. However, in aggregate… If someone can write a script that abuses security flaws in them or their default configuration … even though you’re not part of a big centralized target, you are part of a class that can be targeted automatically at scale.

Self hosting only yields better security when you are willing to take steps to adequately secure your self hosted services and implement a disaster recovery strategy.
