You can activate episodic content as you like and jump around between seasons. It’s tied to the expansion so you buy it = you get the content. This is mostly story but some features / horizontal progression is locked until you complete it. I prefer that over the “you needed to be there when it was free now you have to pay” approach.

For what it’s worth they’re not doing that anymore.

That line hit hard when I played it. It’s rare to see protagonists acknowledge being at the end of their wits and have no clue what to do in face of impending doom.
