Perhaps she thought the carbonation or syrup neutralized whatever she believed she was allergic to in the water. Maybe she was confused by that movie The Others. One time I was in line at a convenience store. The woman in front of me was saying that she only drinks soda because she is allergic to water.

I can understand a child saying that but a grown ass woman? Wow
That was my thought, as well. I made the mistake of engaging her in conversation, but did not find the results fruitful.
